96 CHANNELS PRESENTS BUMPIANA!
Field notes from a DJ workshop turned monthly rave.

Jun 18, 2026 - Written by Kufreabasi Eyo
From outside, you could tell the party was going hard. People gathered at the entrance, greeting friends; outfits chic, faces lit at the prospect of getting down. The night began at 10 PM. Just as Abuja residents were settling into sleep, the venue was coming alive. Chairs had been pushed aside, and a dance floor carved out of the classic club design. The DJ booth was marked by the rave’s bright neon sign, flooding the room in pink light. BUMPIANA! did what it does best: giving guests a cunty night.
The floor opened with Dr Marylyn’s debut set. Groovy sounds blasted through the speakers as feet moved as guests trickled in. The drinks flowed and the crowd got loose as Resident DJ, Belac Panther, in a shimmering net number was soon on the deck, taking it up a notch, building momentum for Momentum’s headliner set. The night peaked as the experimental Lagos-based DJ blared breakbeats. STIRFRY says, “He took it all the way up. I’m talking 130bpm to 150bpm and it was insane.” The show closed with her tech house B2B alongside Cruelworld and partygoers described the night as “one for the books!”

The crowd had come prepared, dressed in statement fits that fit the expressiveness the music amplified. There was rigorous voguing and even a dance battle in front of the DJ booth reminiscent of Blade’s bloody intro scene. People were still pouring in past the official closing time. But as exhilarating as the night looked from the outside, raving is not always pure ecstasy, especially for those building it from within.
BUMPIANA! began at the end of a three-day DJ workshop hosted by 96 Channels last September. The programme was one of the media company's forays into electronic music, alongside documentaries, releases, and broadcasts on the now-inactive Oroko Radio. Towards the end of the workshop, participant Nabilat Usman, aka STIRFRY, conceived a showcase that would allow the newly trained DJs to put their skills before a live audience. With little more than enthusiasm to work with, she developed the event alongside the facilitator, Pasta, designed the flyers, and spread the word. Friends came and had a wild time and BUMPIANA!’s success transformed it into a monthly affair.
So far, the party has had five editions, including a pop-up with Nocturna in Calabar. The team remains committed to experimentation and intends to deliver improving experiences. As STIRFRY puts it, “I want that whenever anyone talks about BUMPIANA!, they can say, ‘This one was way better than the last one, and I had way more fun.’”

She wants to keep it going, envisioning a gradual nationwide expansion. “I’m an overachiever,” she says, “so when I’m passionate about something I definitely do not think small scale.” But that kind of ambition, like most things, cuts both ways. It has helped BUMPIANA! grow an alternative audience that returns for more, but it has also called in some humbling lessons.
“No one showed up. I mean, like, 7 people did. And I was sad about that. ” STIRFRY recounted their underwhelming Halloween edition, “But did we stop? Hell no, we went harder.”
Besides wanting to curate sonic experiences, STIRFRY sees BUMPIANA! as a duty she owes to her community and she is happy to serve. Looking optimistically to the future, she says “BUMPIANA! is going to be so big and impactful.”
Whether her prediction comes true remains to be seen, but the signs are promising. DJ collectives and electronic music communities are redefining nightlife across the country and BUMPIANA! is a part of the expansion. If the Groove Lounge’s packed dance floor was any indication, there is an appetite for these spaces and one can’t help but be excited to watch them get sated.
