ARDOUR AND WHAT MAKES A GREAT RAVE

A guide to what makes the party worth it

Jun 18, 2026 - Written by Kufreabasi Eyo

The cost of a night out is at an all-time high and thrill-seekers are choosing the safety of the tried and true and one can scarcely fault caution when so many events sell the aesthetic without the spirit that the audience adores. Not Ardour. A recent addition to an expanding Lagos rave catalogue that ravers are still raving about.

While many were surprised to see such an impressive production at a debut, those who had paid heed to the signs would be vindicated by Ardour’s spectacular night. Clues? The bold minimalism of their futurist direction, the burning orange, sleek teasers, hints of intentionality that one could expect from the event itself. And the lineup was even more convincing, featuring scene favorites known for hypnotic rhythms at tempos that compelled bodies to move.

On the day of the event, sneak peeks of the venue and set up had been shared on social media, spawning interest from the hearts of the most disengaged. Free Me Space was a superb choice for a rave whose hype had hinted at reasonable size. To see that the burning orange had been translated into carefully arranged golden flashing lights was the last confirmation before a perfect night.

Before midnight, Ardour was packed with striking people walking in, staying out, getting checked in at the ticketing booth. The process was smooth and didn’t keep you too long from the bass-heavy melodies blasting through the cool wind that drew you in. Shokolate had launched the dancefloor before giving way for a dynamic back-to-back by Billysroom and Axara. By midnight Feyisayo Omolola a.k.a Tosar was on double duty on the deck. After weeks of planning, he was at the centre with a groovy Afro-house, Afro-tech set.

When asked how the team could put a spectacle together with no priors, Tosar shared, “It isn’t my first experience being involved in event curation and production plus a lot of what people saw at Ardour came from years of learning and understanding what makes an experience feel intentional from start to finish.”

There was evidence in the sum and the minutia. The music had coursed from minds to limbs and back, bodies became hot and heavy even in the air-conditioned hall. People hugged, stalked corners while smoking cigarettes and sipping drinks, smiles beamed and above it all hung the glinting disco ball, now and for the foreseeable future signaling Ardour.

After Tosar’s time, we segued into a ground-shifting set from Earthsurfing. Her varied selections stood out as they blended with each other and the night approached its crescendo. Whoops could be heard at intervals from the hundreds of people that gyrated in the space. Yosa took over with a barrage of hard-hitting tracks that had many out of breath as feet began to ache with no room for rest because Partyboy’s set was next. The room had dissolved and all its parts were now connected through rapid sound waves, just as intended. Tosar says…

“I wanted to build something that goes beyond a rave and becomes a platform for connection, music, culture, passion, feeling and emotion.”

He described a great rave, “It is one where people lose track of time, feel completely present, discover new music, connect with strangers who become friends, and leave with memories that stay with them long after the night is over.” And stay with them it has. After Naija House Mafia’s high-energy, unforgettable performance closed the night, attendees were scarcely done. They rushed to social media with reactions particularly visible on X. It is clear that there is thirst and a consensus: if this is just the beginning, Ardour is an experience worth returning for.
